Our group was formed and started protesting for the Playboy store opening in Oxford Street in the morning of Saturday 29 September 2007.
The Playboy empire has established itself as a ‘respectable business’ and as a fashion retailer, marketing Playboy branded clothing appealing to the 20-something market. The empire still publish their top-shelf pornographic magazine. Our group wish to continue to raise awareness on the harm and normalisation of pornography and will continue to raise awareness with regular awareness-raising sessions.
Our inaugural protest began with seven protestors, chanting and handing out leaflets.
We had quite a bit of positive reaction from the public passing by, in fact we are gathering new members to our group and have decided to make this a regular event outside the Playboy store—as ‘awareness-raising’ events rather than protests.
We had little/no negative reaction from the public—only from the stores either side of the Playboy shop (Boots and Orange). Future actions will not have the chanting to avoid any future problems.
See our photos and clips from the first protest below*.
